Federal Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Windows

ENERGY STAR rated replacement windows may qualify for a federal tax credit. The rules and amounts change, so here is how to check rather than take our word for it.

The general idea

Federal energy-efficiency incentives have, in recent years, included credits for qualifying energy-efficient home improvements, including certain ENERGY STAR rated windows. Eligibility typically depends on the product meeting a specified performance rating, the home being your residence, and the work falling in a qualifying tax year.

Why we do not publish figures here

Credit amounts, annual caps and qualifying criteria are set by federal rules and can change from year to year. Publishing a number that is out of date would be worse than publishing none, so we point you to the sources that are kept current.

What we can help with

We can tell you whether the windows you are considering carry an ENERGY STAR rating and give you documentation of what was installed. What we cannot do is tell you what you will get back.
